Clients and Projects of the Children's Policy Group

Recent clients for the Children's Policy Group include the following foundations: the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pew Foundation, the Annie. E. Casey Foundation, the Walter S. Johnson Foundation, and the Hewlett Foundation. Additional clients include; the County of Los Angeles Interagency Operations Group, the Contra Costa, Orange, Los Angeles, and King County Commissions on Children and Families, the California Foundation Consortium, and UCLA's Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities.

Over the past four years, the principals and staff of the Children's Policy Group have worked on the following projects:

  • An assessment of decentralized interagency efforts within Los Angeles County.
  • The design of evaluation systems for Proposition 10 funds in four California counties.
  • A comprehensive assessment of early care and education programs within Orange County.
  • The development of a municipal "report card" on children and youth indicators.
  • Standards for evaluating services integration at the county and local levels.
  • Methods of incorporating active community involvement within the evaluation of integrated services projects.
  • An assessment of a nationally funded education reform model emphasizing school-community links.
  • An analysis of policy issues affecting state government within California for a 5-year period ending in 2007.
  • A report on the sustainability choices affecting family resource centers within California.
  • An assessment of the forty California county-level collaboratives addressing children and youth issues.

The leader of The Children's Policy Group, Sid Gardner, has worked in the children and family services field since 1965. He has served as a sub-Cabinet official in the federal government and as a local elected official in Connecticut, and has consulted with more than fifty states, counties, and cities. He has been on the adjunct faculty of seven universities, and is the author of numerous papers and several books on children and family outcomes, services integration, ethics in public policy, and the role of local governments in developing children's policy. His book Beyond Collaboration to Results has been used in the curriculum of several universities, and his new book, Cities, Counties, Kids and Families, published in 2005, addresses the capacity of local governments to develop strategic policies for children and youth.
